Fleet week came quickly this year, however I did get a chance to explore some of the city's excitement during the holiday weekend, starting with a visit to SOB's (Sounds of Brazil) in the meatpacking district. This vibrant dance club is full of excitement, colors, and sounds, primarily island music- Soca madness indeed! The MC's fiery passion was ceaseless; his dancing seemed to take complete control over his body, enticing his audience and fellow dancers to join in the celebration of all things Caribbean. The DJ's music helps you surrender yourself in a similar manner with beats so palpable that your entire body cannot help but become engulfed in the atmosphere. In case you couldn't see the MC above the crowd, they superimposed a video of him (and everyone else on the stage) on top of a backdrop full of photos and videos of various Carnivale parades and festivals. The colors seen in the video clips were only a taste of what lay in the club; from the green blown-glass lamps hanging above the bar to the vibrant art on the wall and weathered marble columns, the dance hall emanated a full color spectrum. While this was my first experience with Soca music and culture, the setting invites you in no matter what your background. It's a whole separate world once you step inside the club, one I had a hard time leaving at the end of the night.
